Dinner jacket (Black tie)

A black tie event means wearing a dinner suit, which is normally worn after 6pm at dinners, suppers, theatre and opera evenings or at events where the invitation requires it. Dinner jackets are normally black. If a white dinner jacket is worn, the trousers are either white or black.

Shawl collar dinner jackets are fastened so that both buttons of a double-breasted suit remain visible. Etiquette requires a black bow tie to be worn with a dinner jacket. Nevertheless, accessories (cummerbund, bow tie and pocket handkerchief) may be colourful, but should match.
